As members of the Khmer Community, we hereby protest and distance ourselves from the proposal to “legitimize” what the United Nations properly challenged as the “hereditary appointment” of Hun Manet as Prime Minister by his father Hun Sen. We do not accept or support Mu Sochua’s misguided effort along those lines. The strategy of attempting to accommodate with Hun Sen was tried many times over the past years with no success. That failure was epitomized by Hun Sen’s rejection of the election results on several occasions in the past, and most recently by his total elimination of the viable political opposition parties in the run-up to the 2023 national elections, accompanied by his initiation of “Mass Criminal Trials” of opposition leaders and other critics of the government.

Our attention and advocacy efforts, and those of the international community through such mechanisms as the Cambodia Universal Periodic Review hearing scheduled before the Human Rights Council on 8 May, need to remain focused on challenging and protesting the Hun Sen/Hun Manet regime’s extensive and long-standing human rights and democracy abuses.

Giving the Hun Sen/Hun Manet regime another chance to reject efforts at accommodation in order to retain their power by eliminating meaningful opposition and by rejecting effective change for Cambodia, is a failed strategy that cannot be repeated.
