This Khmercast session will address the critical issue of land grabs and illegal evictions, which have been a major concern and interest of the Khmer community. For decades, the Hun Manet/Hun Sen government has engaged in land grabs and evictions, benefiting government associates and family members. In November 2023, Amnesty International released a report, "No One Wants to Leave Their Home," documenting how over 10,000 families were illegally evicted from Angkor Wat and highlighting UNESCO's failure to enforce the World Heritage Site Agreement protecting long-term residents.

These issues raise serious concerns about the Cambodian government's actions but also about UNESCO's complicity in these violations. Both Amnesty International and the Khmer Community have filed formal protests and complaints and are currently in discussions with UNESCO and the World Heritage Committee. This session invites members of the worldwide Khmer Community to participate in advocacy efforts that can finally bring international attention and the priority it deserves to this major problem.

Join us to learn more about the complaints, the response from UNESCO and the World Heritage Committee, and how you can actively support these efforts to address long-standing land eviction problems in Cambodia.

Six things you need to know
about the Angkor Wat “Mass Illegal Evictions”

  • Amnesty International has added its weight by taking the lead role on this issue.

  • 10,000 families have been illegally evicted from Angkor Wat’s “traditional villages”.

  • The Angkor Wat evictions are emblematic of the much broader, long-standing problem of evictions in Cambodia.

  • Hun Sen’s family members and friends are direct and substantial beneficiaries of Hun Sen’s eviction policies.

  • UNESCO is complicit in the evictions, by failing to enforce provisions in the World Heritage Site agreement prohibiting displacements of “traditional” residents.

  • You can make a difference! Participate in and support Amnesty’s and the Khmer Community’s reform efforts.
