Mother Nature Cambodia (MNC5) Convictions and Patterns of Civil Society Suppression in Cambodia

In July 2024, five young environmental and human rights defenders from Mother Nature Cambodia (MNC5), Long Kunthea, Yim Leanghy, Thun Ratha, Phuon Keoraksmey, and Ly Chandaravuth, were convicted and sentenced to six to eight years in prison simply for documenting environmental damage, exercising their rights to free speech and organizing peaceful public awareness efforts. Save Cambodia has joined with 72 other organizations in signing this public letter regarding the MN5.

This case is not an isolated event but reflects a broader and ongoing pattern of systematic suppression of civil society, including opposition figures, labor and human rights activists, and other critics. This pattern is already being raised across multiple international frameworks, including governance-linked and trade engagement involving the United States, European Union, South Korea, and Canada, while repressive actions continue.

In November 2026, Cambodia will host the 20th Francophonie Summit, a gathering of heads of state and government from more than 90 countries, centered on issues of democracy, human rights, cooperation, and economic and political coordination, at a time when many cases such as the MNC5 remain unresolved and the continued silencing of activists, opposition figures, journalists, and critics persists.

កាលពីខែកក្កដា ឆ្នាំ២០២៤ អ្នកការពារបរិស្ថាន និងការពារសិទ្ធិមនុស្សវ័យក្មេងចំនួន ៥នាក់ ដែលជាសមាជិកអង្គការមាតាធម្មជាតិកម្ពុជា (MNC5) គឺ ឡុង គន្ធា, យឹម លាងហ៊ី, ធន់ រដ្ឋា, ភួន កែវរស្មី និង លី ច័ន្ទតារាវុធ ត្រូវបានកាត់ទោសឱ្យជាប់ពន្ធនាគារពី ៦ ឆ្នាំទៅ ៨ឆ្នាំ គ្រាន់តែពួកគាត់បានចងក្រងជាឯកសារ នូវការខូចខាតបរិស្ថាន អនុវត្តសិទ្ធិសេរីភាពបញ្ចេញមតិ និងការរៀបចំកិច្ចខិតខំប្រឹងប្រែងដើម្បីឱ្យសាធារណៈមានការយល់ដឹង។ អង្គការ សេវខេមបូឌា បានចូលរួមជាមួយអង្គការចំនួន ៦៩ ផ្សេងទៀតក្នុងការចុះហត្ថលេខាលើលិខិតសាធារណៈនេះ ទាក់ទងនឹងការកាត់ទោសសកម្មជនមាតាធម្មជាតិ។

នៅខែវិច្ឆិកា ឆ្នាំ២០២៦ កម្ពុជានឹងធ្វើជាម្ចាស់ផ្ទះនៃកិច្ចប្រជុំកំពូលនៃប្រទេសដែលប្រើភាសាបារាំង (Francophonie) លើកទី ២០ ដែលប្រមូលផ្តុំប្រមុខរដ្ឋ និងរដ្ឋាភិបាលមកពីជាង ៩០ ប្រទេស ដែលកិច្ចពិភាក្សានឹងផ្តោតទៅលើបញ្ហាប្រជាធិបតេយ្យ សិទ្ធិមនុស្ស កិច្ចសហប្រតិបត្តិការ និងការសម្របសម្រួលសេដ្ឋកិច្ច និងនយោបាយ នៅពេលដែលករណីជាច្រើនដូចជា ករណីកាត់ទោសសកម្មជនមាតាធម្មជាតិទាំង៥នាក់ MNC5  នៅតែមិនទាន់បានដោះស្រាយ និងនៅតែបន្តការបំបិទមាត់សកម្មជនផ្សេងទៀត បិទមាត់អ្នករិះគន់ និងបិទមាត់អ្នកសារព័ត៌មាន។
