Save Cambodia (SC) would like to thank everyone involved in supporting our mission to offer the Cambodian people the necessary tools for gaining self-efficacy towards sustainability through engagements with individuals and global partnerships. Your dedication to our cause is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed. Thank you for also taking the time to read about our projects and engaging with us at SC. SC is invested in achieving gender equality in the education of the Cambodian people. According to the Demographic and Health Survey in 2010, 58% of Cambodian urban girls attended primary school and only 38.1% attended secondary school. In rural areas, 65.9% of Cambodian girls attended primary school and a decrease to 24.1% attended secondary school. There are many factors involved in why young teenage girls are obligated to leave school, but the most common reason is to help fulfill their families' monetary obligation. This unfortunate and sometimes inevitable reason plays a huge role in the low educational rates among women, keeping them in a perpetual cycle of poverty. There have also been many cases where parents are forced to place their children in orphanages because they are not able to take care of them. Because of this, UNICEF and the Cambodian Ministry of Social Affairs, Youth and Rehabilitation are currently creating an Action Plan for Improving Child Care to keep the youth in school and out of harmful institutions.
After spending four months in Cambodia, SC is creating a whole school approach, Cambodian all-girls boarding school with STEAM and Education on Sustainable Development (ESD) programs focused and to provide socio-economic investment opportunities for parents while promoting and strengthening parent-child relationships. This will not only allow for equal opportunities in education, but it would also teach the future women of Cambodia to be competent, innovative, and critical thinkers to ensure a better future for themselves and their community to succeed in this globalized era.
We thank you for your continued support and involvement in Save Cambodia. There are great things happening and we will definitely need your help, so please continue to look out for us in your inbox as we update and share our progress of the creation of the Save Cambodia boarding school for girls and other future projects.
